Mayor Addresses 2021 MoVaLearns Mayor's Challenge Graduating Class

Dr. Yxstian Gutierrez, Mayor of Moreno Valley, wished a fond farewell to the students of the 2021 class of the MoVaLearns Mayors Challenge during an online Year-End celebration. The popular program, offered in partnership with Moreno Valley College, provides a monthly stipend to 50 Moreno Valley residents currently enrolled in Moreno Valley College Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.
“This year’s group of MoVaLearns students overcame tremendous obstacles to finish their classes with many graduating and moving on to exciting new opportunities,” said Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez. “I am proud of these students, and I challenge them to represent Moreno Valley well as they pursue excellence both academically and professionally.”
The Mayor, City, and College staff, including Moreno Valley College President, Dr. Robin Steinback, attended the ceremony and heard from students who shared stories of struggles and triumphs endured during the academic year. Students fought hard to navigate life, work, family, and school during the pandemic.
“I’d like to send a big thank you and appreciation to the Mayor for MoVaLearns because I have learned so much about our City,” said MoVaLearns student Vera Galloway. “The program has meant a great deal to me because of the connections I have been able to make.”
College staff echoed the students’ sentiments and praise for the program with well-wishes for the students and appreciation for the City/College partnership, which created the award-winning MoVaLearns program.
“The MoVaLearns Mayor’s Challenge is a prime example of a successful partnership between a city and a community college,” said Moreno Valley College President Dr. Robin Steinback. “With the wraparound support services and direct stipend, students in this program can complete their Career and Technical Education courses faster or transfer to a 4-year university more expeditiously.”

El Dr. Yxstian Gutiérrez, Alcalde de Moreno Valley, se despidió con cariño de los estudiantes de la clase 2021 del MoVaLearns Desafío del Alcalde durante una celebración de fin de año en línea. El popular programa, ofrecido en asociación con Moreno Valley College, proporciona una mensualidad a 50 residentes de Moreno Valley actualmente inscritos en los programas de Educación Técnica y Profesional (CTE) de Moreno Valley College.
“El grupo de estudiantes de MoVaLearns de este año superó obstáculos tremendos para terminar sus clases y muchos se graduaron y avanzaron hacia nuevas y emocionantes oportunidades”, dijo el alcalde Yxstian Gutierrez. “Estoy orgulloso de estos estudiantes y les pido que representen bien a Moreno Valley mientras persiguen la excelencia tanto académica como profesionalmente”.
El alcalde, la ciudad y el personal de la universidad, incluido el presidente de Moreno Valley College, la Dra. Robin Steinback, asistieron a la ceremonia y escucharon a los estudiantes que compartieron historias de luchas y triunfos sufridos durante el año académico.
