City of MoVal Wins Awards for Current Budget

Spending Plan Lauded for Usefulness and Accessibility to All Audiences

For immediate release: February 20, 2020

Not only is the City of Moreno Valley's current budget the eighth consecutive City spending plan to be balanced, but it's also winning awards for excellence.

The City recently claimed the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), which recognizes the City's commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.

MoVal's budget writers had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. The guidelines are designed to assess how well the City's budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device. Budget documents must be rated "proficient" in all four categories, and in 14 mandatory criteria within those categories, to earn the award.

The City has also been similarly honored for its current budget by the California Society of Municipal Finance Officers with its Operating Budget Excellence Award.

"We are very proud of the award-winning work done by our Financial & Management Services team," said Dr. Yxstian Gutierrez, Mayor of Moreno Valley. "They created a budget that's more than just numbers on a ledger; it's one of our guiding documents and it's understandable to a non-finance audience. I am also proud that we have been able to produce a balanced budget for eight consecutive years."
